The songs are presented in a music-hall and vaudeville style and accompanied by an onstage three-piece band. With a cast of just seven doubling several roles, this led to some confusion as to who was supposed to be who at various points. The show itself was also criticised for not having a clear purpose: was it a camp entertainment, or a satire on Victorian hypocrisy ? It was felt to be unsatisfactory on both counts.
